This is a Hindu holiday celebrated across the Indian subcontinent, Sri Lanka, and other countries with a large Indian diaspora like Singapore, Malaysia, to name a few. Ganesh Chaturthi is a ten-day festival celebrating Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity of new beginnings, and the placer and remover of obstacles. Ganesha idols are installed in homes and public areas, and sweets are offered to him. On the tenth day of the festival, these idols are immersed in water. In big Indian cities like Mumbai, huge public processions carry a large Ganesha idol and travel towards a nearby body of water to immerse it.
